CITIZENS AGAINST GOVERNMENT ENCROACHMENT
CITOYENS ANTI GOUVERNEMENT ENVAHISSANT
CAGE HISTORY

Citizens Against Government Encroachment was created by three individuals who are increasingly concerned about the rate at which the government is increasing its control of our daily lives. Although each had been resisting in their own ways the augmentation of nanny-statism in our wonderful country, they agreed in 2004 to join forces and better organize their efforts.

The idea for CAGE germinated with Dr. David Romano, a political scientist. After years of studying, researching, doing field work in and teaching about the less democratic nations of the Middle East, the current trend in Canadian and U.S. state determinism became all too ominous for him. Having studied extensively grass-roots mobilization movements across the world, he could clearly see how mission creep and government encroachment could never be countered by the myriad of disconnected interest groups, each trying to preserve its own particular and limited realm of civil liberties. The only solution would be to unite everybody who has been pushed around unnecessarily by insurmountable government regulations into a single organized voice.

David Romano approached the only person he knew who had the business and legal experience to put something like this together, and who felt strongly enough about the principles of civil liberty and personal freedom to actually launch the concept. His brother, Daniel Romano, loved the idea and immediately jumped to the challenge of researching the issues and the political dynamics.  After over a month of analysis, the answer was "this needs to be done". CAGE was incorporated as a non-profit organization in January 2005, and immediately went to work sponsoring debates at McGill University, singing up members, doing case studies, developing budgets, consulting with hospitality industry leaders, outlining a growth plan, developing a political and social network, writing letters to government ministries and to the media, speaking to people on the street, in bars and in shopping malls, and actually meeting with municipal, provincial and federal level politicians.

The founders, and original officers of C.A.G.E. are Daniel Romano, David Romano and Lucy Brown.
